"It is a disgrace to the City to see that some of our residents are living in such deplorable conditions. Even though the settlement is illegally erected, basic services like running water should be in place. It is clear that for a long time no attempt has been made to collect refuse but it is our duty to see that our people live in humane conditions."
These were the words of the Mayor of Johannesburg, Amos Masondo.
I have one question: If a settlement is illegally erected, won’t putting in place basic services be viewed as condoning it? If people move illegally onto a piece of land…and the authorities provide ‘basic services like running water’…why would they ever leave?
What we will have next is the authorities, with my tax money, being told to provide services for people who hijack buildings!!!
What is going on here?!!!
